So i was at the nissan dealership today and they notified me that there is a new recall that is just coming out this month for 2002-2004 xterra and frontiers. It is full replacement of your steering column. I have a appointment for mine to get fixed. i would suggest calling and finding out by giving them your vin #. Please note the notice has not been issued yet they told me so you will need to probably check back in a few. The service manager told me he just heard of it and didn't receive the official bulletin yet though. See below I found online

Quote:
Nissan has announced a voluntary safety recall to replace the lower steering column joint and shaft on 2002-04 Frontier and Xterra vehicles and to replace the positive battery cable terminal on 2010 Sentra vehicles in the U.S.

In the affected Frontier and Xterra vehicles, Nissan discovered that corrosion can develop over time on the lower steering column joint, eventually limiting steering movement. In extreme cases, the corrosion can lead to cracking of the steering shaft, resulting in a loss of a control of the vehicle and increasing the likelihood of a crash. In the affected Sentra models, there can be potential issues with the connector on the positive battery cable terminal, resulting in starting difficulties. In some rare cases, the vehicle could stall at low speeds and cause an accident.

No accidents or injuries have been reported with either issue. Overall, 240,000 Frontier vehicles, 261,000 Xterra vehicles and 14,000 Sentra vehicles are included in the recall for the U.S.

Nissan plans to notify owners in early December once replacement parts are made available. The repairs will take place at Nissan dealerships at no charge. For more information, customers can call Nissan?s hot line at 800-647-7261.

I bet it is the shaft that runs from the box to the firewall. I've taken 3 out of xterra's over the years and all of them had one axis of the u-joint that was very rough.

If anyone was planning on getting this done I was told by the dealership up here that they have already run out of this part and now I am on a waiting list. Just an FYI

I just received my notice in the mail yesterday, I'll have to get in ASAP to see if they have the parts around here.

Mine has been "clunking" for a while now.

Does anyone know if the 3" BL (and steering shaft extension) voids this recall?

Unfortuantely I'll be turning that over to the dealer that I just traded in my truck to.

I haven't seen anything yet. I may need to call the dealer.

its a voluntary recall, so i dont think everyone got notices, i never got one... just bring it up to the dealership and they will replace it... and give it a couple of weeks for the part to come in. When they replaced mine they said it was almost like new, better shape than the ones they pulled out of the pavement pounder xterras.

when i got 2 the dealer they started to do paper work and every think was fine, then they seen the truck and sad that i lifted it and the warranty was void
then the big argument started,so after arguing about 10 min the truck went on the lift and mechanic who was actually performing the job never even sad nothing about this.

I had mine done last week, no one complained at me about lift. The only thing he said was "Man, I got out of your truck earlier like I was getting out of a regular Xterra and almost busted my ass!"

I am the 3rd owner of this vehicle and found out about the steering column recall by reading these forums. The recall was issued in Nov of 2010. Just had it fixed at the beginning of June, FREE of charge!! I suggest you guys and gals get your 2000-2004 X's fixed if you haven't done so. Should only take a day depending on how busy your local dealer is. I got mine back by about 4:00 and I was in at 8:00am.

I replaced my myself when I had the steering box out. It was a $120 part and didn't take me any extra time since the old one was out already.

The u-joint was VERY stiff, I can see why they recalled it. . .

It was good to see that new one is a completely different design.

I read up on the recall. It was something about excessive rust on the steering column which would eventually cause steering issues. So, it wasn't going to cost me anything. Then why not? Done deal, no worries.
