I have a first gen 01 xterra. I'm heading home and the rpms dipped and came up and I didn't know what happened. So has I'm about to get on the high way it just dies out and wouldn't start. So about 30 mins later I got it running and it ran really rough and just wanted to die out which it did eventually. I checked spark, it has. I checked fuel, I'm getting fuel. My car only had 91k so I still have some time before replacing my timing belt. The only codes I'm getting is the maf sensor which I had for a few months now and I have a code for p0340. Everyone's telling me to check the maf but I don't know how to check that.
Any possible things I could check that or loose or broken of why it died out on me.
Also how can I check to see if the maf is good or not before I go out and buy one when I don't need it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Also I'm hearing a buzzing sound, it sounds like it's coming from the inside of the tranny I don't know if that'll cause a issue or not

my thoughts
Maf failure is common
you can try cleaning it but with out a scan tool to see what it's putting out it will be hard to determine.
other than just replacing it.
also check your air hoses if cracked or off it will cause the same conditions.

So I swapped the maf sensor and it wasn't that. I have no codes on my scan tool. Anything else I should check for? I have spark which is why I'm confused

does it seem to crank normally speed wise?
you could just start at the basics you say you have spark
can you pull a plug and see it is in time with compression.?
you have fuel pressure at the rail?

I'm getting fuel to the rails. and the spark is good with timing. I'm thinking maybe I should change the plugs and see if that works. But I do t understand why it died when drying and when we got it started for that few seconds it had great spark but it ran like a car with bad timing

Also can the code p0340 cause a no Start issue also? Cause I've read that the sensor is inside the distributor

So my best bet would be a new distributor?

Unfortunately yes...
the distributor is not repairable as separate pieces
if your cam timing is correct and has not jumped... the distributor
controls all of the other engine timing for the ECM.

So just replaced the distributor and still nothing.

It was the distributor. Wasn't lined up properly now she's running fine.

Side note - stop by the Introduction section, and introduce yourself. Maybe post some pics of your truck, too.
