Post subject:  Car will not start

So about two weeks ago I went to start my 2003 Xterra and the car was completely dead. The day before I accidently pulled off the wiring for factory alarm kill switch and I thought it was that so I put it back together and nothing. I disconnected the battery thinking it was dead and brought it into the shop and inspection and it passed. Then I took in the alternator and the same thing it passed. I later on checked the starter and everything is fine.

I also thought I had a parasitic drain somewhere but the battery seems to be holding the voltage just fine. My next step is to check the wiring and ground.

I was just wondering if anyone has had such a problem.

Thanks

Ditto with the grounding, almost always the first place to start.

Couple questions:
Does it turn over at all, but not fire?
If it doesn't turn over, are you getting a "click"?

There is a common issue with the first gens with the starter. The posts tend to rust off. Sometimes they rust just enough to not work, although a visual inspection still passes.

Here's how I diagnosed my bad starter
Test you have battery voltage to the starter
Test you have signal voltage to the solenoid
- If both check out, you have an issue with your starter or solenoid -
DISCONNECT THE BATTERY, and then take the cables off of the posts on the starter. Chances are, one of those posts are "loose" in the housing.

If this is your stock starter, it may be time to replace it anyway. . . mine went at about 85,000 miles while I was on a camping trip in the 'dacks - I had to replace it at my campsite - not very fun. . .
