It’s tough to tell from the clip, is it louder under the X? Compared to over the open hood? Could be dragging the starter. Could be the alternator. The VQ40’s alternator is pretty low and can get debris in it, causing premature failure, especially after a dirty water crossing.

Trying to think of everything that makes noise that I can.

In the front it could be something as simple as a stick or similar in the way of the fan. Could be the idler pulley, or tensioner.

Does it turn on and off? On with defrost and off when you turn the HVAC off? Could be the AC compressor. Really it could be any of the components run by the serpentine belt.

Hopefully it isn’t inside the motor or trans.

It’s tough to troubleshoot over the internet. Any more info would be helpful.

Is it only at idle? Or while it’s in drive? Auto or manual?

Auto. Seems to be in drive and idle. A squeaky bushing i can deal with myself. This one is going to the shop. Too much at risk. Know your limits, right?

Definitely! Smart call. There is far less frustration for you. Nothing worse than throwing time and $$$ at a problem, and still have no fix. Let the professionals take care of it.

Post up what it is. My guess is the alternator.

So I did some snooping under the hood with the engine running and it was pretty clear that a lot of the noise was coming from what I think is the power steering oil pump pulley. I'm still going to have the shop handle it but just for future reference, how do you deal with a noisey pulley? (Not squealing or squeaking, more grinding)

Did you ever get this figured out? Sounds like the alternator's bearings are causing a lot of noise. Could be from those mud puddles in Freetown.

Going to the shop Wednesday. I think it's the bearings on the power steering pump pulley although it could be multiple pulleys. And yes, most likely from the Freetown mud. Still worth it!

John got it. Noise is from a really f*cked alternator.
