SUV driver seriously injured in U.S. 301 crash
UPDATE 6:08 p.m.: Troopers have identified the man whose Nissan Xterra who crashed with a Publix Semi trailer on Highway 301 just after 1 p.m. today as 35-year-old Eliud D. Velazquez of Brandon. He is awake and talking after being aitlifted to Tampa General Hospital though he still has serious injuries, said Sgt. Steve Gaskins of the Florida Highway Patrol.
TAMPA - An SUV driver swerved into the path of a Publix semitrailer truck this afternoon on U.S. 301 north of Fowler Avenue, the Florida Highway Patrol said. The grocery truck driver escaped injury but the driver of the Nissan Xterra was flown to Tampa General Hospital in serious condition.
The collision just after 1 p.m. shut the highway from County Road 579 to Thonotosassa Road. It remained closed as of 4 p.m.
FHP Cpl. Thomas O'Donnell said the Publix truck was southbound and the Xterra northbound. The crash, which occurred near Stacy Road, tore the rear wheels off the semi.
Wade Holland, 21, of Temple Terrace, was at work in a nearby auto shop when he heard the crash. He jumped in his car and rushed to see what had happened. When he reached the black, mangled Nissan, the driver was pinned in the vehicle, bleeding from the head.
Holland said the man was struggling to get out of the car. He held the man's neck still until paramedics arrived on scene, worried about the possibility of spinal injury.
A woman who was behind the Nissan recorded the crash on video but left when troopers arrived.

That is crazy!! Do you think that he was trying to kill himself?

A guy up in maine ran his car head on into one of my brother in-laws tractor trailers and he did it to committ suicide... he was successful.

Not only could your brother-in-law have died but now he has to live with that for the rest of his life. Seems as if there are more efficient ways of accomplishing the task that would not involve innocent bystanders. I have far less pity for people who have no regard for innocent bystanders or worse, feel they need to take innocent bystanders with them, cowardly and selfish IMHO.

I don?t know if this guy was attempting suicide, drunk or texting someone and distracted. I feel bad for the semi driver, who like your brother-in-law was just doing his job.

My cousin fell asleep at the wheel crossed the highway and drove straight into a Dump Truck. Died on impact.

7 Years Ago last week.
