Tom thanks for nudging us into going wheeling Sunday. Not that we need much of an excuse but... Suresh, it always great getting out with you although in the up coming photos it would be tough to prove you were along. I have gotten sooo lazy about taking pictures, I seem to just leave the dash camera going and take low quality stills off the video. And Sunday Suresh was behind me all day so no pictures of the Black Rubicon, but he was there, really

This run was a bit "special" for me cause Sat I spent the afternoon getting my ARB locker/compressor wired up, switches installed and working. And Sunday, I had the capability of being fully locked front and rear! D'oh! another thing to think about while fast approaching an obstacle. Oh well I love it!

So Pictures, here are a few: The first has Suresh hiding in the trees, Jeff driving around the mud up in the trees - He HATES mud! And Tom working his way through the mud/water hole.

Just a bit further up that section of trail finds Tom again in action (yes Tom spent the day in front of my Dash Camera:

and a couple of seconds later:

Then we reached the VERY BUSY BEAVER section. It's always wet but Damn it's been Dammed:

Tom,

Great photos thank you.

Damn beavers!

Ernie, do join us but the Sandisfield trail would be more your rig's speed. Jeff is always trying to get someone to make the run with. That's the trail that set off my side air bags, andI just don't like spending that much time grinding on my skids and sliders, but your Toy would be great.

Looks like we might try to hit the trails on Saturday evening, 7/23/16. The plan is an evening / night run. Try to hit the trails around 6:30 ish and off the trails around 9 - 9:30.

Still tentative right now, but if anyone is interested PM me (Jeff) or Scott.

Beat the Heat - Night Run

Jeff and I are headed out this Saturday (7/23) to our usual Otis, MA area. As always a couple of additional rigs are fun to have along so if your available join us! Think light blue trails for 3 to 5 hours, mostly after dark. One long deep clean water crossing so a breather extension is recommended. Skids and sliders are strongly recommended because you will hit on a few rocks.

Times are not finalized but figure we meet up at my house 5:30 to 5:45 leave no later than 6:00 for the trail head. Should be at the trail head 6:30 - 6:45 where we'll meet up with anyone coming in from the North or Mass Pike. Air down and hit the trail by 7:00 pm. This should have us airing up sometime between 10:30 and midnight. As always there are a number of spots people can exit if they need to leave early or we're running very long.

Scott

PS: Jeff beat me to the post, as I said time is not set in stone but I think my time line will be more accurate :)

Scott - what did you have to fix on the front axle/diff from MaBell?

And I might be able to make the run, will confirm.

Suresh,

The axle broke off at the spindle inside the diff. With a pry bar and hammer I was able to beat the CV portion of the broken axle out but couldn't figure out how to get the remaining chunk out so I punted and brought it up to CT Axle, where Pete was nice enough to let me work/watch & learn with him. He removed the diff which gave me the opportunity to flatten the skid plate back out w/ his 20T press. We where then able to poke/beat the stub out with a 3/16" dia. drill rod. (I showed up with a selection of 4 rods from 3/16 to 1/2 dia X 6-ft lg). With the two pin ARB Locker Carrier that was all the room we had but it worked! He then took the diff cover off and ran a magnet around the housing looking for any metal chunks. Replaced the two oils seals and reinstalled the diff. I got the opportunity to replaced the 8mm rivnut I stripped earlier for the engine skid. Got it and the axles installed. Oiled and skids back in place and done in the one evening.

My RCV - SUPER AXLES are due in any minute so I hope these two are it for broken CV Axles. I will start carrying the drill rod as a tool to be able to help others. Anyway I'm back in action!

I hope you can make Sat pm,
Scott

Wow, going big with the rcv axles... Pricey but I bet you have no more axle problems...

Tony,

After two broken axles in the last two NEXterra events I ran, kind of justifies the RCVs in my mind, especially with the transfer case motor burning out in the first event and the need for Pete's help this time. Add in the two replacement standard axles and yeah, they should be worth it. Ever hear of the diff side shaft failing? That's my next concern, having that spline break off in the diff.

Are you joining us Sat? It's always good having you along. Got lights all over that fancy bumper yet?
